The Dangers of Skipping Your Oil Change: Insights from Darcy Blazek

By Darcy Blazek, Blazek Diagnostic & Automotive Repair

As a seasoned professional with 20 years of experience in the automotive field, I’ve seen firsthand the consequences of neglecting regular oil changes. At Blazek Diagnostic & Automotive Repair, my husband Tony and I have dedicated our careers to ensuring vehicles run smoothly and efficiently. One of the most critical aspects of vehicle maintenance is adhering to the recommended oil change intervals. Ignoring this can lead to severe and costly damage.

The Role of Engine Oil

Engine oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle. It lubricates moving parts, reduces friction, and helps dissipate heat. Over time, oil breaks down and becomes contaminated with dirt, debris, and combustion by-products. This degradation reduces its effectiveness, leading to increased wear and tear on engine components.

Potential Damage from Delayed Oil Changes

  1. Cam Phasers: Cam phasers are crucial for adjusting the timing of the engine’s valves. They rely on clean, high-quality oil to function correctly. Dirty or old oil can cause cam phasers to fail, leading to poor engine performance, reduced fuel efficiency, and potentially catastrophic engine damage.
  2. Sludging: When oil is not changed regularly, it can turn into sludge—a thick, tar-like substance that clogs oil passages and restricts oil flow.  Sludging can cause various issues, including increased friction, accelerated wear on engine components, and even overheating.
  3. Motor Replacement: In extreme cases, neglecting oil changes can lead to catastrophic engine failure. Without proper lubrication, engine parts can seize up, leading to a complete motor replacement. This is one of the most expensive repairs an owner can face, and they usually are still paying on the vehicle.

The Importance of Regular Maintenance

Regular oil changes are a simple yet effective way to extend the life of your vehicle. By following the manufacturer’s recommended oil change intervals, you can avoid the costly and extensive repairs associated with neglect.

***In cases where the manufacturer’s oil change interval is in excess of five thousand miles, we recommend NOT exceeding the five thousand mile interval, as the oil filter begins to degrade and builds carbon, which is a sticky substance that causes the oil galleys and screens to plug up, and will eventually tear up the cylinder walls.  This is true for all synthetic oils as well!

Conclusion

Skipping oil changes might save you time and money in the short term, but the long-term consequences can be devastating. From cam phaser issues to engine sludge and even motor replacement, the risks are too significant to ignore. Remember, regular maintenance is the key to a long-lasting, reliable vehicle.
